Education
School of Concrete and Construction Management Orcutt Winslow
This project stands as a testament to innovative design and functional elegance in the realm of education. The design team collaborated closely with students, faculty, and University’s planning and design department to create a distinctive and educationally enriching building. The vision was to showcase the diverse applications of concrete through a thoughtfully crafted architectural language.
The building features an array of concrete applications, including color-tinted floors, glass-embedded surfaces, exposed formed walls, and etched art graphics on the exterior. These elements not only highlight the material's versatility but also serve as a practical demonstration of concrete’s potential in design. The use of concrete block and exposed structural elements further reinforces the educational mission of the space, allowing its construction mechanics to function as a live teaching tool.
Attention was given to human-centered design with a focus on acoustics, lighting, and overall spatial experience. Durable, high-performance materials were specified to ensure longevity and utility. Notable design features include a digital graphic wall covering and window film derived from the original construction documents, a custom conference table with a live wood edge and blue resin, and suspended wood and metal ceiling systems that balance visibility of infrastructure with acoustic performance. Handrails and wood pads from site-cleared trees add a unique touch of sustainability.
The design also integrates spaces for donor recognition and a special project room for student-industry interaction, enhancing practical learning and industry connections. This approach not only promotes academic excellence but also strengthens pathways for student internships and job placements.
This project exemplifies a commitment to design innovation, practical training, and industry collaboration, setting a high standard for educational facilities in the construction sector.
