Capitol Christian Music Group | Gresham Smith

Capitol Christian Music Group (CCMG), a leader in faith-based entertainment, recently relocated its headquarters into a new mass timber structure building within the lively neighborhood of Wedgewood Houston, marking a new chapter after 30 years in Brentwood, Tennessee. This move catalyzed a re-invention to align their business, culture, and workplace.

CCMG’s culture, characterized by high collaboration and competitiveness, often conflicted with the desire for better work-life balance, reduced hierarchy, and less siloed operations, as well as a sense of hospitality. Acknowledging CCMG's desire for more within the new, but smaller footprint, the design team spearheaded an extensive workplace strategy effort – including voices from across the organization. A set of guiding principles was established to aid in decision making throughout the project.

The team successfully introduced a free-address work style for most employees, reduced office size dramatically, shifted the ratio from individual space priority to shared space priority and dedicated 25% of the office footprint to a hospitality rich reception and multi-functional work lounge.

Creating an impactful first and lasting impression was paramount for CCMG – key features include a welcoming reception that is more coffee bar than desk, a lounge with a commanding LED screen for artist content, private outdoor terraces and a 'Creative House' studio suite catering to collaboration and innovation connected to the work lounge by a large monumental stair. Within the work areas the division of space is fluid – there are no departments, but rather zones of working spaces that allow for flexibility and choice.

Six months post-occupation, the office is a vibrant, energetic destination. Artists and writers appreciate the supportive environment, for some it is a factor in their signing decisions. The project, currently seeking LEED Silver certification, can accommodate up to 170 employees, preparing for future growth.
